Reading a Flower COA: Potency, Pesticides, and Moisture

A certificate of analysis contains more useful information than most buyers stop to examine. Potency gets the attention. Two batches with identical THCA figures can carry different minor cannabinoid compositions, and that difference reflects variation in the cultivar or growing conditions rather than any deficiency in either product.

COAs that report THCA without providing the calculated total THC figure are presenting incomplete potency data. The conversion matters because it changes the practical number by a meaningful margin.

Pesticide screening results

Pesticide panels test against a defined list of agricultural chemicals that may have been applied during cultivation. Each compound on the panel carries an action limit expressed in parts per million or parts per billion. Results above that limit constitute a failure for that specific compound, regardless of the overall batch result.

  • A passing result confirms that detected levels fall below established action limits rather than confirming the complete absence of the tested compounds.
  • Panels that test a selective subset of pesticides rather than a full list provide less assurance than comprehensive screening.
  • COAs reporting pass or fail per compound, rather than numerical concentrations, communicate the same information in a condensed format.
  • Flowers from cultivation practices that avoided pesticide application entirely will typically return non-detectable results across most or all compounds on the panel.

Moisture content readings

Moisture percentage reflects how well the flower was dried and cured after harvest. Most COAs report this as a percentage of total weight. The figure sits outside the range most buyers consider relevant, which is a misjudgement given what moisture content actually indicates about batch handling.

Flower above 15% moisture levels above 15% carry a meaningful risk of microbial growth during storage, particularly in sealed packaging without active humidity control. Flowers below 8% has dried past the point where terpene content is well preserved, and the session reflects that in both flavour and burn rate. A reading between 10% and 13% indicates a flower that was handled correctly through the full post-harvest process. That range supports terpene preservation, even combustion, and a storage window that does not require immediate consumption to avoid quality loss.

Potency, pesticides, and moisture together describe the batch more completely than any single figure does alone. A COA that covers all three sections from a credentialed third-party laboratory sets a minimum standard worth holding any flower purchase to before completing the transaction.
